SR Swap + Car insurance (Canada) - 05-01-2002, 08:42 PM

So I've been phoning around to get car insurance on a 95 240 with an SR swap with around 30,000 invested in the car as a total. But I can't find a company that wants to insure the car for 30,000 worth of car and parts, little'own find a company that want to insure a modified car (non-classic hot rod). I'm in Calgary but am curious to see if people in Canada have had any luck or any referals.

I would hate for someone to hit me and loose all the money I invested, or the insurance company not to cover me due to the car was modified.

X)

You can get supplementary insurance to cover any added modifications to your car. You're regular insurance, in BC, will cover up to 5 grand. I found this out when they saw my paint and rims and told me I was already way over (little did they know, hehehe) Now the engine puts me far far over. But it's really damn expensive for extra coverage. What ICBC doesn't know won't hurt them and if something does happen, well, I'd buy the write-off for sure. As for getting stiolen, make sure you have lots of pictures and receipts to prove what you had and they will probably screw you over, just not as badly.

Is insurance private in Alberta? That may cause more of a problem. Check that Canada direct onbe, if you have enough safe driving. Anyone on here using that one?

Insurance is privatized here. I guess I will search harder to find companies that do those kind of things. But man my biggest problem with this car/swap is not even the car itself, man i hate insurance companies.

I just pefer to pay more to make sure everything I invested is covered. But if something happend , those damn insurance companies will do everything to screw me over.

Just the other day there was a guy in my local speedshop with a Integra, he had to get his car raised because he made a claim on the breaking in and the stereo was stolen, appraiser looked at the car and said if he did not raise the car back up they would void his insurance and because his car was lowered it attracted the criminals to break in it.

i spoke with icbc about insuring an imported car (85 trueno, 89 silvia, or 89 r32) and i was quoted 1100 with my 35% discount. that included special consideration for the fact that parts will be hella expensive. the only downside is that icbc will be more likely to write the car off in a small accident.

dont see why a 240 w/ sr swap would be any different

Mavro "well, I'd buy the write-off for sure"

When that fu**er t-boned me, I asked to buy the car back and they just laughed at me. I was told (could of been BS) that first off I would need a salvage licence, and second they auction it to the highest bidder.

it is bs. they can sell it back to you b4 it goes to auction. i asked icbc about that b4 cause i dont wanna lose all my mods. and if they dont wanna sell it back to you, you can ask to remove all the parts you want from it.
