240 with high milage - 10-13-2002, 10:59 PM

Ok, i've located an almost perfect 91 240 SE. Its got no rust, runs great, etc.. One problem, just kinda high milage. around 294k. It had the top half of the engine rebuilt at 244k, and runs beautifully as we speak. This car has been well taken care of and is clean and rust free. Unlike that first 240 i saw. What do you guys think this is worth? All that really would need to be fixed is the engine. How long do you think it will last at its current state and how much is it to do a complete rebuilt on a KA24? What do you think this car is worth? $5000? or less?

oh, btw. Most of the kms are highway kms. the current owner has had it for 2.5 years and drives 160+ k each day to and from work on the #1 highway.

FYI,
Driving the #1 to and from work every day is slower than city driving and does not count as highway driving. It's harder on the car as you mostly stop and go. I don't know what it's worth, but don't let him pull the "highway Kms" crap on you.

Id say if its less then $5000 itd be worth it. But seriously man, if you have any doubts about the cars that your checking out, just walk away. I know you must be excited to be buying your first car, but as long as your patient youll find a good one. Dont settle for anything that has anythign wrong with it. Youd be surprised how many perfect cars there are out there. Trust me, I know what its like to be anxious to buy a first car.

yeah, well the only negative thing is the engine on this car. I'd be prepared to do a rebuild or an engine replacement if i get the car for cheap. I just wanna know what a new engine or a complete rebuild would cost..

it wont be worth it
in the end itll cost you like 6-7000, and youll end up having a rebuilt engine, thatll run good but a chassis thatll have all the kinks that come with chassis thats 300+kms old. Things are gonna break. A car isnt all in the engine.

196k on mine....fuel economy is tolerable at 500km a tank 70%city/30%highway. But you just gotta keep in mind that a car this old usually have some sort of small problems. I am currently having rough idle and hesitation at low RPM. But other parts of my car (suspension, brakes, A/C, steering components) are all working great. You'd be surpised that everything on the 240SX will last a pretty long time, except for the KA, which usually give people tons of problems. I will not even waste my time and money on the problematic KA engine. I will just beat it up until I have the cash for a new engine.

Just look at the 240sx.org faq section. Everyone has problems with their KA engines. I guess as a car gets older, they will have more problems. Also, the EGR components are a bitch to replace. They are located between the firewall and the engine. I spent 400 bucks of labour to replace a EGR solenoid, which only takes 15min to install on the Altima.
