Hey look a new guy with stupid..... -
07-10-2008, 01:56 AM
Gawd i know members love the new guys with stupid questions
I wouldnt even try the green card of asking sr20 vs ka but it sucks all those 2 and 3 year old threads are closed, that is good discussion...
Im having a hard time finding my way on this forum, im from the mazda3forums and it was a different template, been there for four years and a well known moderator, so im just to used to that template i get confused otherwise....
I just sold my 2007 mazdaspeed3 (today actually) i was getting tired of FWD and all the things i could never do, the 290whp and 310wtq was great thrills but i bought a 2009 Toyota Corolla S to get me to my 84 mile-a-day trip to work (37 mpg AVG) and been looking at a little project/fun car
I was hoping some locals could through out a few shops to buy a motor, or places to go to get a motor, maybe install but i kind of want to do that myself for the enjoyment
I came across a s13 and im probably going to buy it, i might scan the auctions for a couple months to see what else i can come up with but im sure whatever i end up getting its going to be high mileage or blown motor
After an hour of reading i still dont know what motor to go with, i really dont know shit about 180/240's i got a couple buddies that told me to hop on here i dont know their user names but "hi" mike & jason
I havent even heard of CA whatever it means, i know about KA SR and RB
dont quite know exact specs or anything.. haha
Just looking for some helpful people that can maybe go over some information they would like to share or direct links are nice also, if there are trolls out looking for newbies please just write "PSDB" on the back of your hand
Names Matt, 27, live in Port Orchard

search is your best bet, google and the search option on the forums.
your best bet is to read, and not ask questions unless its strays from the main stream, but im bored and feeling nice, ill give a breif explainations, KA from the old nissan pick ups. good low end toque stock in 89-95? 240's, SR 20 easy to make big hp, stock in s14's im not sure on how the color tops were laid out, but i know red top and black top. most options and the easyest am engine is the sr20 its plug and play and alot of AM parts. RB series is from skylines not sure if thats where it orginated but rb 20 comes in r32's? and rb25 in the r33? and the rb26 somewhere in there* again not sure this is just what ive somewhat gatherd myself after a while of trolling.
uhm not sure where port orchard is, but try unatural or UP garage, some of the more repitable shops in oregon and wa. dont forget kami dori! just read lots and you'll learn real fast.
(sorry for spelling grammar and puncuation but you can still read it this isnt a school essay so blow it up yer arse's)

haha thanks zack, yeah im reading and its late so im drifting in between many threads only reading every other post its terrible
i just wanted a motor that i could beat the shit out of, i mean i would do maitenance on it and take care of it but the car will literally be my toy where i go out and have fun, i got all kinds of mixed emotions reading threads about the SR vs KA because it was so neutral so i just want it laid out
I think i will spend some more time looking around since im not out to make myself look really stupid but mine as well ask right?

Honestly noone can tell you what motor to get. Everyone has a preference from CA to KA-T to SR to RB hell even a few LS1's!!! But first and formost learn your own car because each one is different. Good luck man and welcome.

That is all that is needed to be said.
Ha ha
Just do some research buddy, you will learn the difference really quickly between red tops and black top SRs, CAs, RBs and KAs

You should hit one of the thursday night meets.
Then you can pick some people's brains personally about motors. What they have, why they chose it, if they're happy with their decision, blah blah blah...

Here is a really quick run down:
KA24e
-Single overhead camshaft
-Fun engine, but not real powerful
-Responds well to FI
-Iron Block, Aluminum Head
-Any Dual overhead Cam engine swapped into a 240 with this engine as the stock motor will require the DOHC power steering lines, or some custom lines. New DOHC lines are about $300.
-Not a lot of aftermarket support
-Single timing Chain
-Distributor Driven Oil Pump
KA24DE
-Dual Overhead Cam motor
-Good amount of Torque and HP
-Responds well to FI
-Iron Block, Aluminum Head
-Not a lot of aftermarket support
-Dual timing chain (Idler Sprocket)
-Crankshaft driven Oil Pump
S13 SR20DET (Red Top)
-DOHC
-All aluminum engine
-Stock internals have proven reliable up to about 350hp
-Lots of aftermarket support
-Requires a bit of rewiring, not difficult
-Requires DOHC gauge cluster.
-Good stock engine = about 205bhp
-T25 journal bearing turbo
-Single Timing Chain
-Crankshaft driven Oil Pump
S14 SR20DET (Black Top/Notch Top)
-DOHC
-All aluminum engine
-Stock internals have proven reliable up to about 350hp
-Lots of aftermarket support
-Requires a bit of rewiring, not difficult
-Requires DOHC gauge cluster.
-NVCS (Variable Cam timing on intake)
-Good engine = about 215bhp
-Can't remember turbo.
-Single Timing Chain
-Crankshaft driven Oil Pump
S15 SR20DET (Black Top)
-DOHC
-All aluminum engine
-Stock internals have proven reliable up to about 350hp
-Lots of aftermarket support
-Requires a bit of rewiring, not difficult
-Requires DOHC gauge cluster.
-NVCS (Variable Cam timing on intake)
-Good engine = about 250bhp
-S15 Spec R has T28 BB Turbo
-6 speed transmission stock in S15, 6sp speed sensor is in the diff.
-Single Timing Chain
-Crankshaft driven Oil Pump
CA18DET
Belt Driven DOHC
RB motors
TOO MUCH MONEY
Repair parts and aftermarket are very pricey.

Amen to that!
And have Kami Dori do it! Why???
|
|
|
\|/
Cause we already have done it..and are currently rockin a full built crate Ls1 in the above 240.
But remember budddy..when you go fast..you need to turn fast and stop fast. Brake and suspension upgrades are a MUST

You could not be in a better town to want to get into 240's than port orchard.
You may want to give Justin at Position1 racecraft a call and see if he has any for sale. Even if he doesn't he is one of the best resources possible for the most important thing you can do with your s chassis, set it up properly.
Anything you need, from swaps to bodywork to having a cage blessed by little baby jesus - you can get it at position1 racecraft.

I forgot to mention, as far as a motorset / clip goes the best bet for you is UP Garage. Not too much of a drive for you and you are guaranteed a great motor.

I second that. Doug and his crew over at UP Garage hooked me up with a great deal on my Blacktop SR and took care of the wiring harness conversion for me. They even helped me dispose of the frame from the half cut, and were great about answering any questions I had. They're great guys and definately a good place to go for a new engine.
As for which engine to go with, as everyone's said, most of the information is out there already, you've just got to take the time to look for it. The question I asked myself when I was looking for a swap was how much of a challenge do I want. The breakdown (from what I understand) is that RBs and LSx swaps are more difficult, but have higher HP potential, whereas the SR and CA are much easier swaps (as both engines were offered in S-Chassis cars over in Japan). As this was my first swap, and I'm really not a very good mechanic, I opted for the SR. So far I'm glad I did. It really wasn't too terribly difficult to drop in(just remember to cut/seal that damn AIV pipe before dropping the engine in. ).
If you're looking for info on the SR swap, I'd strongly suggest reading through the SR FAQ and install guide over at www.srswap.com. They've got a lot of great info on their site.

if you want something you can beat the crap out of you might want to look into CA18.
I read that thoes correct me if im wrong are just as durable as an RB and you wont NEED to go killing your budget on suspension and brakes as much.
although saftey= #1
good luck

Don't overlook the silky smooth RB's.....Great motors. And parts aren,t as hard to get as everybody thinks they are, you just gotta know where to look. But of course, I might be a little biased

A RB20 in an s14? How much room you got in that engine bay now? How many bodies can you hide. lol

Dead on the money.
Of course the initial investment is higher, and there are some things you can't get around (example: a quality exhaust manifold for an upgraded turbo is not cheap, or easy to find, unless you get really lucky and find one used).
There are loads of resources for parts though. People have been building cross references for some time now on what parts work for what. Example: need a thermostat? Head down to Nissan and tell them you need a Z32 thermostat.
There's lots more, igniter, starters, coil packs, etc etc etc. You don't have to have it overnighted from Japan in order to have it here in time for race wars.

its all about how much cold hard cash you got and you wanna spend. i think getting a solid sr20 redtop halfcut from up garage would be a great way to get a sick car going. doug at up garage has a kind of list of upgrades to do in what kind of order so that youre not spending tons of money on parts, getting rid of them, and upgrading. he can help you build a motor that will tear up the streets. give him a call. he'll hook you up.

i was thinking if i went sr20 to get the s14 blacktop halfcut for the gt2560r turbo instead of the t25 turbo because i already know i will only be thinking about a bigger turbo if i go the t25 route, i was hopeing to just roll the stock turbo either direction i go, i dont really need high penis hp numbers, im just looking for solid power and enough on tap to have some fun with
s14 blacktop into s13 is the same as s13 redtop into s13 as far as difficulty right or the the s14 blacktop a whole new game for the install?
