Since so many people ask questions all the time about all the differences between the 240SX, Silvia and 180SX I thought I'd make this little post to clear it up. Maybe it can be a sticky, or stuck in the FAQ section or something.
OK here we go. This will explain it for you all (hopefully).
North America:
1989-1990: 240SX HB / Coupe - 140hp SOHC I4 (KA24E)
1991-1993: 240SX HB / Coupe - 155hp DOHC I4 (KA24DE)
1994: 240SX Convertible - 155hp DOHC I4 (KA24DE)
1995-1996: 240SX Coupe - 155hp DOHC I4 (KA24DE)
1997-1998: 240SX Coupe M/C - 155hp DOHC I4 (KA24DE)
JDM Market (everywhere but here):
1989-1990: S13 Silvia (240SX Coupe) - 175hp DOHC I4 Turbo (CA18DET)*
1991-1993: 180SX (240SX HB) / S13 Silvia (240SX Coupe) - 205hp DOHC I4 Turbo (SR20DET Redtop)*
1994-1996: 180SX (240SX HB) - 225hp DOHC I4 Turbo (SR20DET Blacktop (S13))*
1995-1996: S14 Silvia Coupe (240SX Coupe) - 250hp DOHC I4 Turbo (SR20DET blacktop (S14))*
1997-1998: S14 Silvia Coupe M/C (240SX Coupe M/C) - 250hp DOHC I4 Turbo (SR20DET Blacktop (S14))*
1999-Present: S15 Silvia Coupe - 280hp DOHC I4 Turbo (SR20DET Blacktop (S15))*
*Denotes the top models. Silvia's come in Jack, Queens and Kings models (J's, Q's, K's). All power figures and motor types are in the K's cars.
Also - There is a difference in the blacktop motors. Different horsepower ratings and various other minor things in the motor make the S13 ones different from the S14 ones. The S15 blacktop also comes with a 6sp tranny, first Silvia to get one.
180SX / 240SX HB:
S13 Silvia / 240SX Coupe (see special models in next post):
S14 Silvia Coupe / 240SX Coupe:
S14 Silvia Coupe M/C / 240SX Coupe M/C:
S15 Silvia Coupe:
SPECIAL MODELS!
SilEighty - A 180SX with a Silvia front end. Sil (*Sil*via) Eighty (1*80*SX ):
How it came about: Drifters would crash when drifting and total their front ends. They would go to the junkyards to get new ones but realized that S13 front ends were cheaper than 180SX ones. The S13 panels bolt onto the 180SX because the two share the same frame (from B-pillar forward). S15 conversions are most popular these days as older Silvia or 180SX owners want to look better.
OneVia - An S13 Silvia with a 180SX front end. One (*1*80SX ) Via (Sil*via*):
How it came about: Drifters who crashed wanted something different, or they wanted to be like us in North America. Our 240SX Coupe is a OneVia. Nissan didn't bother importing both front ends, so just stuck the 180SX nose on the coupe.
Nismo 270R - A special edition S14. Brought out to celebrate the next Silvia generation (the S14):
Came with a 270hp SR20DET along with some other special edition Nismo goodies like coilovers, interior etc. Only 30 were made. The one pictured is X-02, and I know the owner
Nismo Silvia GT300 - A special edition S14 M/C. Brought out to celebrate the Silvia's success:
Came with a 270hp SR20DET along with some other special edition Nismo goodies like coilovers, interior etc. Unknown number were made, real pics are impossible to find.
So there you have it! Hope that helps everyone![]()

Excellent post Wangan! We'll let this post run for a few days to allow for any corrections to be edited in the original post, and then we'll copy it over to the FAQ for future reference

12-04-2002, 09:05 PM #11Strawberry Face is a company that makes kits to fit S15 front ends onto various cars. They have TONS of other kits too. For example, Datsun 510 to KPGC10 Skyline GT-R. Or even a Datsun 240Z front onto an old 300ZX! Cool companyOriginally posted by vspecskyline

12-04-2002, 09:59 PM #13actually, the company i think your talking about is called West Yokohama, theyre the only ones that incorporate the strawberry face phrase to the s15 front conversion, i believe it was first made up in the street, when someone custom fitted the s15 front to their car for the first time... i guess no one knows who made coined the term first... but for those who dont know, its just a play on words really, since 15 in japanese is pronounced ichigo, while strawberry in japanese is also ichigo...Originally posted by \\'angan

Re: The 240SX / Silvia / 180SX
Your info here is way off. The SR20DET powered 180sx was made from 1991-1998 (not 1996) and always had 205hp. The switch to the S13 blacktop happened in 1994 and there wasno power increase.Originally posted by \\'angan

There was also a European market 200SX which came with the CA18DET until 1994 after which it was replaced with the S14-chassis car and the SR20DET.
S14's had 225hp, not 250. They came with a ball bearing T28 (T04B compressor housing) and VTC but still had the 370cc injectors that the S13 engines had.
S15's had 247hp, not 280. They came with a ball bearing T28 but with a ceramic turbine section, and also had VTC. In addition to this they came with 480cc injectors and a 6-speed gearbox.
EDIT: removed some irrelevant quoted material

I'm 99% sure the Kouki 180SX's were 225hp, and stopped in 1996.Originally posted by max_burke
